This is the story my mother, Jean Jeffries, tells about that chorus: “An evangelist, Alex Burns and his brother (from Scotland) traveled up and down the east coast preaching and singing. Alex played accordion and his brother played the concertina. When they were in the area they ate meals at our home. World war 2 had just ended and the “new look” was out (skirts to mid calf and usually dark). In looking at our 8th class picture, Alex said we looked like a bunch of old ladies and asked why we dressed like that. I said, because that’s the ‘new look.’ He said people need to get the ‘new look’ from the Old Book and wrote the song right then. He was preaching the night I got saved. I was the first child he’d seen converted. Our families kept in touch for many years.”
